President John Mahama was a special guest of honour at the memorial service held at the Rev. Ernest Bruce Memorial Methodist Church for the 153 Ghanaians who died in the June 3, 2015, disaster.
The service was organised by the Accra metropolitan assembly , Adabraka local council of churches in collaboration with the National Petroleum Authority.
The theme for the event is “Never Again, June 3rd Disaster Focus on Health and Safety”.
The memorial service was also attended by families of the deceased, as well as survivors of the tragedy that hit Ghana hard. A host of government functionaries and members of opposition parties all graced the occasion.
President Mahama in a tweet commemorating one year of the sad incident said: “May the souls of those who departed on June 3, 2015, rest in perfect peace. We’ll continue to correct developments that led to the disaster.”
The memorial service was followed by a wreath laying ceremony at the Goil fuel station, the epicentre of the disaster. President Mahama was among those who laid the wreath.
